Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Spain?

• UK Drivers: Thanks to post-Brexit agreements, if you hold a standard UK photocard driving license, you do not need an IDP to rent or drive a car in Spain for short tourist visits. Your UK license is perfectly valid!
• EU Drivers: Your domestic EU license is completely valid.
• US, Canadian, and Australian Drivers: Yes! Technically, Spanish law requires non-EU license holders to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their native, valid domestic license. While the rental desk might not always ask for it, if you are stopped by the Guardia Civil without one, or if you are in an accident, you can face a hefty fine. They are very cheap to get at home before you travel, so it's always best to bring one for peace of mind!

Can I rent a car with a debit card in Spain? Yes, but with strict conditions. Most major Spanish rental companies strongly prefer credit cards to hold the €1,000+ security deposit. If you only have a debit card, many companies (like Centauro, Record Go, or Enterprise) will gladly allow you to use it, but they will require you to purchase their premium "Zero Excess" Super CDW insurance at the desk. This acts as their financial security since they cannot easily block a deposit on a debit card. This is actually a great outcome, as you get fully comprehensive coverage and no money is blocked on your card!

Can I drive my rental car into Portugal, France, or Gibraltar?

• Portugal & France: Generally, yes! Most major companies allow you to take the car across the border. However, you must inform the rental desk when you pick up the car. They usually charge a small "Cross-Border Fee" (around €30-€50 per rental) to ensure your insurance coverage and roadside assistance properly extend internationally.
• Gibraltar: While you can drive into Gibraltar, we highly, highly advise against it. The border queues to get in and out of the British Overseas Territory can take hours, and parking on the tiny Rock is an absolute nightmare. Do what the locals do: drive your rental car to the Spanish border town of La Línea de la Concepción, park in a secure underground garage for a few euros, and simply walk across the border! It is much faster.

What happens if the car gets dirty from the beach? Please, enjoy your holiday! Rental companies fully expect cars to come back with standard travel wear: dust on the exterior, bug splatters on the windshield, and a little bit of sand on the floor mats from the beach. They will run it through their car wash for free. You will only face a cleaning fee if the car requires a professional deep clean (e.g., soaking wet seats from sitting in wet swimsuits, excessive mud inside the cabin, or smoking inside the vehicle). Treat the car nicely, and you will be absolutely fine!

What happens if I return the car a little late? We know that Spanish traffic or long holiday lunches can delay you! Most rental companies happily provide a generous 29-minute to 59-minute grace period. If your contract says the car is due at 10:00 AM, you can bring it back at 10:29 AM with absolutely no penalty. If you are delayed further, you will usually be charged for an extra day at the local rate. If you know you are going to be significantly delayed, give the local branch a quick phone call to extend the rental safely.
