Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in France?

• UK Drivers: Thanks to mutual agreements, if you hold a standard UK photocard driving license, you do not need an IDP to rent or drive a car in France for short tourist visits.
• EU Drivers: Your domestic EU license is perfectly valid.
• US, Canadian, and Australian Drivers: Technically, French law dictates that if your license is not issued by a European Economic Area (EEA) country, you should carry an official French translation (which is exactly what an IDP provides). While many rental desks will accept just your native license, if you are pulled over by the Gendarmerie (police) without an IDP, you can face a fine. They are very cheap to obtain in your home country before traveling, so always bring one for peace of mind!

Can I rent a car with a debit card in France?

Yes, but major credit cards are much easier! Most French rental companies strongly prefer credit cards to hold the €1,000+ security deposit (the franchise). If you only have a debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo, many companies will allow it, but they will physically debit the deposit from your checking account (which can take weeks to refund), or they may strictly require you to purchase their premium "Zero Excess" Super CDW insurance at the desk. They will run it through their car wash for free. You will only face a cleaning fee if the car requires a professional deep clean (e.g., deep mud in the upholstery, massive amounts of pet hair, or smoking inside the vehicle).

What happens if I return the car a little late?

Most rental companies happily provide a generous 29-minute grace period. If your contract says the car is due at 10:00 AM, you can confidently bring it back at 10:29 AM with absolutely no penalty. If you are delayed further by traffic, you will usually be charged for an extra day at the local rate. If you know you are going to be significantly delayed, just give the local branch a quick phone call to extend the rental safely.
